Sisterhood Congregation Shaar Hashomayim
A little about the Meals-On-Wheels Program at the Shaar:
Every year since its inception in 1972, the Sisterhood of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim provides home cooked hot kosher meals as a resource to recipients who want to continue to live full and autonomous lifestyles.
Working hand-in-hand with Cummings Jewish Centre for Seniors this program offers a seamless continuum of support to recipients who, despite the challenges of age and/or disability, need to be relieved of the burden of cooking on a day-to-day basis.
Different from most Meals-On-Wheels programs, this project provides nutritionally balanced meals prepared fresh in the newly renovated Meals-On-Wheels kitchen. "The love and commitment our volunteers have shown towards this project over the years towards the project is remarkable," says Rhonda Herman, Meals-On-Wheels Coordinator. "They are so dedicated and think nothing of coming in at 7:30 a.m. three times a week to make sure that our recipients don't have to worry about what they are going to eat during the week. With almost 5,000 meals going out every year, our volunteers really fill a niche in the community."
Aside from a coordinator, the program is run exclusively by volunteers who want to make a difference by delivering a bit of hope, independence, friendship and a smile with every meal.
