The Shaar's special place for 65+

Naomi Kassie founded the Leisure Institute in 1968. The Leisure Institute of Congregation Shaar Hashomayim hosts educational and cultural activities geared primarily towards retirees, with a roster of popular programs open to the community. Attracting sizeable crowds, the Leisure Institute encourages adults to socialize, learn, and enjoy the fruits of retirement.

Sundays at the Shaar


 
Our Sundays program is a bi-monthly lecture and musical series that features
local experts who discuss relevant issues. It is open to the community and
includes a delicious lunch. Guest presenters have included local celebrities
Thomas Schnurmacher, Dr. Joe Schwarcz, Josh Freed, Cantor Gideon Zelermyer, Lynne Kassie, and Dr. Issie Weisglass.

Open Gate Program

Our non-sectarian community program offers frail seniors, 65 to 100+, a stimulating day out each week. The program includes transportation, music, exercise, games, crafts, guest speakers, and a hot lunch. Open Gate received The Community Service Award from Federation CJA.

Open Gate Game Day Gala: Bridge, Mahjongg, Canasta

The Open Gate Game Day Gala is an annual fundraiser to help support the Open Gate program. Attended by hundreds, the gala consists of a lunch, bridge tournament, social Mahjongg and Canasta featuring spectacular door prize items and raffles.
